Proposed alternatives to the Evening Time Trials Points Competition, based on results from the 2004 season

The committee have been discussing the existing points system, since it is felt that our current system does not distribute points fairly, ie. beyond 9th place. With fields of over 20 this seems to remove incentive, since it does not differentiate between for example 10th place and 20th. It was suggested that we have a larger number of points for 1st place, so that points are awarded all the way down the order. The suggestion is for all events to award 30 points for 1st, 29 for 2nd, etc. Clearly there are winners and losers with this system, so we need to make it as fair as possible. Here are the arguments and proposals:

• All events, whatever the distance to carry 30 points to the winner, down to 1 point for 30th place.
• A rider's best 20 events out of 24 to count over the season (or 4 less than the total if there are any cancellations). The reason for this is that with more points available the penalty for missing an event is severe. This will give riders a chance to be ill occasionally, go on holiday, etc.
  
• At the moment the penalty for non-finishing is also severe (ie. receiving one point only). The suggestion is that a rider with a DNF in an event should be credited one point less than the last finisher, subject to maximum of 5 points.
• However - The argument for treating a DNF more sympathetically is that a genuine problem can be seen as bad luck - but what about riders who just stop after one lap of a 25?
  
• A minimum of one point to all starters, whatever the size of entry (as now).
  
• Tandem & 2-Up riders - treated same as DNFs.

The committee couldn't decide whether to drop a rider's worst 4 events, or increase this to 6 events. As a result the season's results have been calculated with each rider's best 18 and best 16 events. The "points to drop" column shows how this has influenced the outcome. If it's any consolation the scratch and handicap have resulted in exactly the same winners, whether we use every event, or drop 4 or 6 in the final calculation - it's the places below that show the differences.
