Results of Rugby RCC 4-Hour Time Trial - 11th September 2005
In their last club event before leaving for Australia Roland & Sue Elsdon covered the greatest distance on their tandem, but the winner of the Mick Taylor Trophy was Colin Stiles for his 3rd win over an 11 year period and his best result in terms of miles covered. Marina Bloom showed just why she is a National Champion when it comes to longer events by securing 2nd place, while Craig Middleton proved his improvement over the season was no fluke with his 3rd place. With the convention of one prize per rider Lawrence Webster was able to claim the prize for the best vet, while Stuart Sherriff showed after his end-to-end epic that 4 hours is just a trip round the block. A "numerical" error in the provisional results understated Tony Johnson's distance by around 8 miles, allowing him to also get in the prizes. There's always some bad luck stories in the 4-hour, with Mike Bloom and Steve Fulford suffering mechanical problems, while last year's winner and the event record-holder Rob Tobin retired after 30 miles with back pain. Unluckiest rider must be Graeme Lloyd who retired after colliding with a stray horse near a gypsy encampment on the finishing circuit, but unlike John Clarke last year Graeme was able to walk away from his accident. Thanks to all the timekeepers who once again stood around the finishing circuit for more than two hours to make the event a success.
