Results of 4-Hour Time Trial held Sunday 14th September 2008

This year's event was a genuine record breaker! First we had a record entry, certainly for more than 20 years, and we also had new individual records set. Guest rider James Wall clocked 99.375 miles which is a new course record and Hywel Davies beat his own club record of 94.878 miles set last year. In the Women's category Marina Bloom beat her own record of 85.169 miles which she set in 2005. Emily Ducker pushed her hard and even exceeded Rachel Lloyd's previous record of 81.875 set in 2004. There were many tales of bad luck, like Ray Dyke puncturing twice and Martin Orrill going off course - twice - before realising it was not his day. Rob and Amanda Tobin started off as a 2-Up, then Rob decided to do a lap of the finishing circuit alone. Three riders finished on 51 miles - that is coincidentally the distance when stopping at the pub on the first lap!. The large number of riders created big problems for the six timekeepers, especially when two or three riders came together. It's taken a while to unravel some of the problems, but the results are now reliable - however, if you think there's an error please let us know. Next time we must develop a slicker means of recording times. Some riders using accurate computers and Sat-Nav claim their distances are greater than shown here. That's quite possible, since here we're relying on established course measurements, but at least everyone's being measured against the same standard and that goes back some years. All in all it was a good event, the weather was kind to us and for once we didn't lose anyone on the way.
